BAR HARBOR – Ruth Irene Hodgkins, 96, died Dec. 22, 2012, at a Bar Harbor health care facility. She was born Sept. 20, 1916, in Lisbon, the daughter of Nelson Stanley and Nellie Florence (Reed) Hodgkins.
The family moved to Bar Harbor in 1929. Ruth attended schools in Bar Harbor, graduating from Bar Harbor High School in 1934. After graduation she became a bookkeeper at Bar Harbor Steam Laundry. Ruth left Maine to work at Raytheon Co., Waltham, Mass., advancing from a clerical position to the secretary of the financial manager of the Waltham facility. During this period, Raytheon developed the computer for the Apollo moon landing, enabling her to witness the event from a perspective few others had. In 1971 Ruth returned to Bar Harbor due to the terminal illness of her father. She worked as copywriter at Radio Station WDEA in Ellsworth, later promoted to traffic manager. She left WDEA to take a part-time secretarial job at Mount Desert Larger Parish. Later she took on the second part-time job at the town office in Bar Harbor, which turned into full time work. Ruth retired briefly but returned to work as secretary at the YWCA of Mount Desert Island. Illness forced a second retirement. For the past few years, she has worked part time during the summer season at the Chamber of Commerce.
Ruth is survived by numerous, very special friends. She was predeceased by her parents; and her only sister, Esther Hodgkins.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, with the Rev. Mary-Carol Griffin officiating. Spring interment will be at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor. Contributions in Ruth’s memory may be made to Church of Our Father, P.O. Box 186, Hulls Cove, ME 04644 or Mount Desert Island YWCA, 36 Mount Desert St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.
