Hope man jailed on eluding police, gun charges

ROCKLAND, Maine — A 30-year-old Hope man will remain behind bars for the holidays after police say he led them on a high-speed chase through three communities.

Christopher Kimball was ordered held without bail Monday morning during a hearing in Rockland District Court. Kimball was charged with eight offenses — eluding an officer, carrying a concealed weapon, refusing to submit to arrest, criminal operating under the influence, criminal speeding, aggravated operating after his license was revoked, driving to endanger, and violating a condition of release.

Defense attorney Jeremy Pratt acknowledged during the Monday hearing that bail was a moot issue since there was a motion expected to be filed by the probation office to revoke Kimball’s earlier bail. Kimball had been on bail following his arrest in August for several offenses including operating after revocation and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence.

According to a police report filed in court concerning the latest charges, a Rockport police officer had tried to stop Kimball who was operating a motorcycle at a high rate of speed on Route 17 shortly after 11 p.m.
Saturday. The operator refused to stop and drove into Rockland where he led Rockland officers there on a chase, according to the police report.

During the chase, Kimball drove the wrong way on a one-way section of Main Street, failed to stop at stop signs, drove 60 miles per hour on the residential street of Talbot Avenue, and reached speeds of 90 miles per hour on Old County Road in both Rockland and Thomaston, police reported.

Eventually, police said Kimball tried to turn around his motorcycle on Broadway, a dead end road in Thomaston. As Kimball tried to turn around, a Rockland officer got out of his cruiser and tackled the motorcyclist.

Kimball resisted and there was a struggle before he was handcuffed, police reported.

A loaded .45-caliber Beretta handgun was found in a backpack that Kimball had, according to the report.

Kimball was taken to the Knox County Jail in Rockland.
