Saco man accused of aggravated assault on family member, police say

SACO, Maine — Police are investigating what Saco police called “a serious assault” between a man and a female family member.

Carmine Riccardo Sr., 30, is being held without bail at the York County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault, a Class B felony, Deputy Chief Jeffrey Holland said Wednesday afternoon.

The assault occurred at Riccardo’s Washington Avenue residence late Saturday afternoon, and when the woman came to the Saco police station to file a report, she was in rough shape, according to Holland.

“She really took a beating,” he said. “Her eyes were swollen shut. She had some bruising on her back.”

Holland thinks the attack occurred shortly after the woman arrived home from her job in Westbrook. After speaking to her, police went to the house to get Riccardo’s side of the story, and when it didn’t match up with the woman’s, he was placed under arrest.

A small child also witnessed the assault, according to Holland. No weapons were involved, he said, and the case remains under investigation.

“We’re looking at some other charges down the road if we can get what we’re looking for,” said Holland. “We’re looking to have that done by the end of the week.”

The woman was treated for her injuries at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
