BREWER AND BANGOR – Rose Edith (Plummer) Reed, 93, wife of the late Donald E. A. Reed; beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, passed away Dec. 14, 2012, at a Brewer nursing home with her family by her side after an extended period of declining health. She was born June 19, 1919, in Bangor, daughter of Elmer T. and Rose M. (Morrill) Plummer, and was raised in a very large family.

Rose attended local Bangor schools and had fond memories of attending Mary Snow School on Broadway as a child. Rose worked in the local shoe factories as a young woman and met her future husband, Don, there and they were married Aug. 24, 1940. Rose and Don made their home in Brewer for the majority of their life together and raised five children in the family home on Highland Avenue. Rose’s home was her refuge and her pride and joy, and she could quite often be found shopping at the local stores for new treasures to decorate her home and yard with. Rose loved shopping for bargains at Freese’s, Bangor, until it closed, and quickly found a replacement in Zayre’s, K-Mart and Rich’s. Rose was a bargain shopper long before it became the norm. Rose also enjoyed working around the house and in her garden planting vegetables and flowers for all to enjoy. She loved sitting in her swing outside in the summertime enjoying the fruits of her labors. Rose enjoyed the simple things in life: a nice Sunday ride and picnics with Don and the kids, ice cream cones, the fresh smell of lilacs and roses, and a nice big lobster with lots of butter and potato salad. Rose worked at various jobs throughout the years after her children were all in school, but was happiest as a stay-at-home housewife and mother. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren whom she adored. She always made time for playing with the kids and grandkids, entertaining them in a rousing game of cards, checkers, badminton and croquet in the summer. Rose liked spending time at the family’s camp lot at Lucerne, cooking a wonderful meal over the brick BBQ and constantly yelling at the kids to “Don’t go out too far!” Rose will always be fondly remembered for her delicious meals, pies and wonderful molasses cookies – all of us kids and grandkids can thank Mom for the sweet tooth we inherited from her. Due to the selfless efforts, caring and love shown to her by son Dale, Rose was able to stay in her beloved home until she had a debilitating stroke at age 85 and she began residing at Brewer Rehab and Living Center.

Rose was predeceased by her parents, several brothers and sisters; and her husband of 44 years, Don, in August 1984. She is survived by her five children, Sandi Ormsby of Derry, N.H., Carlon Reed of Temple, Texas, Dale Reed and his wife, Pat, of Orrington, Tom Reed of Temple, Texas, and Sue Brennan and her husband, Mike, of Derry, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Terry, Eric, Shannon, Scott, Don, Casey, Rob and Erin; eight great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Ryan, Cody, Alexandra, Sarah Rose, Madison, Sam and Reilly; two great-great-grandchildren, Teegan and Aeris; several brothers and sisters, many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call noon-2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. with the Rev. Grace Bartlett officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer, in the spring. Those who wish to remember Rose in a special way may make gifts in her memory to Alzheimer’s Association, 383 U.S. Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
