Laurence W. Johnson

NEWPORT – Laurence W. Johnson, 89, recently of Naples, Me., died Dec. 16, 2012, at Cedars Nursing Care Facility after a several month illness. He was born Nov. 3, 1923, in Eldorado, Neb., the fourth of eight children of Everett R. and Esther (Scheer) Johnson.

He graduated from Harvard High School in Harvard, Neb., in 1941 and attended Doane College in Crete, Neb., before joining the service. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps as a lieutenant in Karachi, India in 1943 and 1944 and it was while stationed in India that he met his future wife, Doris “Dottie” Salley. Larry and Dottie were married in Madison, July 10, 1946. Larry and Dottie were long time residents of Newport, where Larry worked for State Farm Insurance, H.P. Hoods and Son, Ray’s Electric, and the Newport Post Office. Larry retired as postmaster of Newport Post Office in 1984. Larry loved to play golf and spent many mornings at both Palmyra and Pittsfield golf courses. He was also an accomplished knitter. He was a very active member of many Masonic organizations in Newport, Bangor and Waterville, some of which are Meridian Splendor Lodge No. 49, Newport, Stevens Royal Arch Chapter No. 28, Newport, Scottish Rite Freemasonry Valley of Portland/Bangor 33rd degree, Knights of York Cross of Honor Pine Tree Priory No. 65, Red Cross Constantine St. Omer No. 2 Commandry, Cross and Crown Tabernacle # LIII, Mt. Lebanon Council No. 13, Anah Shrine of Bangor, and Tri-County Shrine Club. Larry was also a member of Barrows-Skidgel Post 105, Newport. Larry has made his home in Naples, for the last 10 years.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Sally and Wayne Hall of Hendersonville, N.C., Judi and Roger Beverage of Yarmouth, Jill and Paul Nash of Naples; granddaughter Jessica Hunter of Naples; stepgrandson, and his wife, Shannon and Jennifer Nash and their children, Sean, Charlotte and Ethan; two brothers, Kenneth Johnson of Port Orchard, Wash., and Lowell Johnson of Sioux City, Iowa; one sister, Nancy Webster of Bailey, Colo. Larry was predeceased by his wife, Dottie in 1996; and by brothers, Harold and Bernard Johnson; and sisters, Helen Traudt and Dorothy Kahm.

Masonic funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport, officiated by officers and members of Meridian Splendor Masonic Lodge, Newport.
