Three-car crash on I-295 hinders morning commute, police say

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — A three-car accident slowed the morning commute on Interstate 295 on Thursday, but nobody was seriously injured, police said.

Spencer Keith, 33, was headed northbound near exit 8 around 8 a.m. when a tire blew on his Ford pickup, according to State Police Trooper Jonathan Heimbach.

A second vehicle, a Volkswagen driven by Amanda Kantner, 36, couldn’t stop and struck Keith’s pickup, and a Toyota operated by Kelley Purinton, 39, hit Kantner’s vehicle, the trooper said.

The driver’s hometowns weren’t available, Heimbach said.

None of the drivers suffered significant injuries, but Kantner was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, according to Heimbach.

Keith and Purinton were checked out by medical personnel at the scene and did not require a trip to the hospital, the trooper said.

Traffic on the interstate was reduced to one lane while crews cleaned up the accident. All three vehicles were towed from the scene, and while none of them were demolished, Heimbach said “none of them were in great shape.”
