Black ice-related crashes slow traffic on South Portland bridge

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Black ice on a busy Casco Bay Bridge resulted in two minor accidents and major traffic backups Thursday morning, police said.

The first crash occurred around 8:15 a.m., according to South Portland police Sgt. Paul Lambert, when a Subaru Forester bounced off the bridge’s inner barrier, rolled over and came to rest on the outer barrier.

A short time later, two cars slid back and forth on the ice and a third vehicle couldn’t avoid the first two, resulting in a three-car pile up, the sergeant said. All four cars were heading northbound toward Portland on the bridge.

The names of the drivers weren’t immediately available. Two of them were taken to Maine Medical Center for minor injuries, according to Lambert.

The northbound lanes of the bridge were shut down for about an hour while the scene was cleaned up, Lambert said.

Correction: An earlier version of this story requires correction. The accidents happened on the Casco Bay Bridge, not Veterans Memorial Bridge.
