Herbert L. Smart

HOWLAND – Herbert L. Smart, 76, went home to the Lord, Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012. He was born Sept. 27, 1936, son of Charles and Madeline (Batchelder) Smart.
Herb’s childhood years were spent on Pleasant Street, Passadumkeag. Herb moved as a young man to Connecticut and began his career working at Pratt & Whitney. Anyone who knew him knew those were the days he talked of the most. While in Connecticut, he was able to stay close to many of his siblings and their families. He was always proud of what he had done for them and what they had done for him. In his later years, Herb moved back to Maine caring for his mother and to enjoy the family he loved so much. Herb enjoyed spending time at Boyd Lake at the camp he and his father built in the 1960s. He and his nephew, Greg, continued to keep it up year after year. He was so happy with Greg and Terry’s remodel of the camp this past year. Herb could always be seen riding with his dear friend, Leeman King, or having a lunch with him at the 95er – or what he called “93.” Herb had great stories to always share during Sunday dinner at Greg and Terry’s. He would tell of all the odd jobs Leeman and he had done throughout the week. Herb used to look forward to his morning visits with his brother, Manson, enjoying a breakfast sandwich, maybe even a doughnut and coffee with him. Herb was also very pleased to have his niece, Becky Hatch, visit and clean every week. Herb liked to walk, almost as much as his scratch tickets and his love for NASCAR. He was a true Tony Stewart fan. He loved it when Diane Gasch would take his hat off and rub his bald head for good luck. He also loved to sing to all of us his favorite song, “Love Me Tender.” But, most of all, we will remember Herb for his smile, his wit and how he loved making his family laugh with his dry sense of humor. Herb enjoyed life to the fullest always looking out for someone else rather than himself. He truly had a heart of gold.
Herb will be sadly missed by his nephew, Gregory Clukey and wife, Terry, of Lowell; very special great-niece and great-nephew, Corey and Nicole Clukey; the apple of his eye, Maddison Olivia Clukey, who called him “Uncle FERB”; nephew, Francis Clukey and wife, Cindy, of East Millinocket and their daughters, Beth and husband, Jon, and Michelle and husband, Phil; brother, Manson Smart and wife, Barbara, of Howland and their children, Becky, Bobby and Rachel; sister, Joan Neal of Enfield and children, Clarence Jr., David and Melinda; sister, Shirley Ross and husband, Darrell, of Lincoln and children, Stephanie, Jean, Valerie and Carl Jr.; sister-in-law, Sandy Smart of Connecticut and children, Daniel and Dennis; and nieces, Wanda and Bambi Smart, and Kathy Finch and husband, Chuck, all of New York. Herbert also leaves behind a special friend, Leeman King; several great-nieces and great-nephews, along with other family and friends. Herb was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Madeline; sister, Geraldine Clukey and husband, Francis; brother, Joseph Walter Smart and wife, Maggie; brother, Douglas Smart and nephew, Douglas Jr.; brothers-in-law, Carl Dunn and Clarence Neal Sr.; great-nephew, Jacob Neal; great-great-niece, Katherine Smart; along with many other family members.
There will be a graveside service 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Gould’s Ridge Cemetery. Those who wish may sign an online register and leave written condolences at www.clayfuneralhome.com.
