AUGUSTA, Maine — Flags are at half-staff in Maine in remembrance of Pearl Harbor Day.

Gov. Paul LePage signed a proclamation honoring the sacrifice of those on duty in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Dec. 7, 1941.

Japanese aircraft sank four battleships and damaged four others, and sank or damaged other warships, and destroyed 188 aircraft. More than 2,400 Americans were killed.

The following day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a declaration of war against Japan. He proclaimed Dec. 7, 1941, “a date which will live in infamy.”
