WINDSOR, Maine — A head-on collision on Route 17 on Friday afternoon claimed the life of an elderly Coopers Mills woman and seriously injured a Livermore Falls woman, according to the Maine State Police.
Helen Hinckley, 76, was pronounced dead at the accident scene, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said early Friday evening.
Trooper Christopher Rogers said Hinckley’s car crossed the centerline and collided with the second vehicle head-on, McCausland said.
Rogers said Hinckley might have suffered a medical problem just before the crash, which took place at the Whitefield-Windsor town line on Route 17.
The driver of the second car, Rita Cushman, 66, of Livermore Falls, suffered serious injuries, McCausland said. She was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Information about her medical condition was not immediately available.
Busy Route 17, which connects Augusta and Rockland, was closed at the crash site near Peaslee’s store for more than two hours, McCausland said. He said the road reopened shortly after 4 p.m.
