SUV driver, passenger injured in Newport crash with 18-wheeler

By Andrew Neff, BDN Staff

NEWPORT, Maine — A man and his wife were injured after the GMC SUV he was driving crashed into the side of a tractor-trailer truck exiting the Irving truck stop onto Route 2 late Thursday afternoon.

“The tractor-trailer truck driven by Christopher Skidgell of Smithfield was pulling out of the Irving to head west on Route 2 toward Palmyra and the GMC Yukon driven by Michael Robinson of Newport was traveling East toward Newport,” said Newport police Sgt. Sanger Davis.

David said the cause of the crash remained undetermined and that the accident was still under investigation as of Thursday night.

“No charges have been filed at this point,” said Davis.

Robinson, 50 and his wife both suffered injuries that Davis said an EMT on the scene told him were not life-threatening. They were taken by Sebasticook Valley Hospital and Mayo Regional Hospital ambulances to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield.

Skidgell, 41, was uninjured and his truck had no major damage. The Yukon was totaled.
