EAST MILLINOCKET – Leon A. “Sonny” Cousins, 84, husband of Lilia “Betty” (Bernal) Cousins, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 at a Lincoln hospital. Leon was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Howland, the son of Leon E. and Edna (Dunn) Cousins.
Sonny graduated from Schenck High School, class of 1946. He attended the University of Maine at Orono. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the American Legion serving between 1950-1952. He was employed by Great Northern Paper for 38 years, retiring as a master electrician. Sonny married the love of his life, May 19, 1962. They recently celebrated 50 wonderful years together. He was a member of the Nollesemic Lodge No. 205, Millinocket and Anah Temple Shrine; recently receiving his 60 year membership pin. Sonny loved classical and Irish music, art and history. He enjoyed using his hands at carpentry, his mind with investments, and his heart with charity.
In addition to his loving wife, Lilia “Betty,” Sonny is survived by daughter, Marlene Patricia Higgins and children, David, Carolyn and Lily; daughter, Marie-Elena Raquel and Mark Brown and children, George, Elena Marie and Erik, of New Jersey; daughter, Edna-Louise del Pilar and Dr. Steve North and children, Adara and Michael, of Vermont; son, Leon A. Cousins II; son, Karl Harris Cousins and his daughter, Vanessa; son, Edwin Llewellyn and Jennifer Cousins and children, Ariana and Alexander Cousins; son, Robert Scott Cousins, daughter, Anna-Lisa Cousins and Loren Bailey and children, Andrew and Carson, of New Hampshire; and son, William Robert and Jennifer Cousins; sisters, Margaret “Peg” Cousins, Priscilla and Chet Nutting, and Rosemary Cousins; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, son-in-law, Thomas Higgins; and brother-in-law, David Thombs.
Friends may pay their respects with the family 5-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Lamson Funeral Home, 17 Western Ave., East Millinocket. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church of East Millinocket, 11 Maple St., with Pastor Dottie Hutch officiating.
