John was born on May 13th, 1929 in Bangor, ME to Harold A. Hatch and Margaret J. (Campbell) Hatch.
John served in the United States Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller for over 20 years. During his time in the military, John was able to see the world. It was during his tour in Berlin, Germany during WWII that he met and married his wife of over 50 years, Helga W. Hatch.
After he retired from the military, he worked for the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller. He worked there for over 15 years until he retired once again. John had many hobbies, but flying was his passion. In addition, he enjoyed taking care of his property in Hampden, attending the yearly Air National Guard lobster feed, and serving as a Eucharistic minister both in Maine and in Florida.
For the last 9 years, John spent his time in Niceville, FL with his friend and companion Jean Waite. John and Jean loved to travel, so they spent their summers on the road. John met many new wonderful friends in Florida.
John was predeceased by his parents Harold and Margaret Hatch, brother Lewis, and his beloved wife Helga. He is survived by his two sisters: Josephine Ross of Hampden, and Theresa Forrest and her husband, Harold Forrest, of Winterport. He is also survived by his children: Harold (Skip) Hatch and his wife Sue of Las Vegas, NV; Thomas F. Hatch and his wife Celeste of Lyman, ME; daughter Elizabeth A. Patterson and her husband John of Augusta, GA. John will also be greatly missed by his five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews. A final celebration of John’s life will be held in the spring.
