BANGOR – Evelyn Sawyer Hodsdon

Bangor

Evelyn Sawyer Hodsdon, 83, passed away peacefully Dec. 3, 2012 at Westgate Manor where she had resided for the past eight years. In the hours before her passing, she was constantly attended by her children, grandchildren and the incredibly caring staff of Westgate Manor. Evelyn was born March 26, 1929, in Steuben, the daughter of Victor E. and Lula (Gardner) Sawyer.

Evelyn was raised in Milbridge, where her father was a fisherman and her mother a school teacher. Her family spent winters in Milbridge but moved annually to their cottage on Chipman Point in Steuben for the fishing season. Growing up on the ocean as the daughter of a fisherman, Evelyn enjoyed spending summer days on the shores of Pigeon Hill Bay -whether painting buoys for her father, exploring the Puddle Hole or throwing fish guts at her older brother, Harold! She instilled a love of “The Point” in her children and grandchildren that continues to this day. Evelyn graduated salutatorian of her class from Milbridge High School. She attended Colby College with dreams of becoming an English teacher. She left college early to marry her husband, Kenneth Hodsdon and start their family. It turned out that her true calling was in being a strong and loving mother to her five children, Stephen, Marie, Michael, Mark and Melissa. She devoted her life to loving them fiercely, supporting whatever path they were on and to heralding their accomplishments to all who would listen. The same held true for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She spent many hours rocking them as babies, attending their school and sporting events and writing proudly of their accomplishments to family and friends. Evelyn shared a special bond with her granddaughter, Jessie, who predeceased her in 2006.They both suffered with mental illness but chose to fight to the very last through what were many incredibly hard and painful days. Evelyn was a woman of great faith in God and lived her faith every day in word and deed. Evelyn was a longtime member of Orthodox Presbyterian Church congregations in both Houlton and Bangor. She ministered to many people in and out of the church, visiting the sick, tending to the elderly, writing cards and letters and making sure others were not forgotten. Evelyn was a wonderful cook, making many delicious desserts that ensured a lifelong sweet tooth in all her children. She loved the Boston Red Sox and recalled often the time as a teenager that she took the train to Boston to take in several games and was fortunate enough to see Ted Williams in action. Evelyn was a master game player spending countless hours playing many spirited games of cribbage and monopoly with her children and grandchildren. Evelyn’s sense of humor was well known, well honed and never failed her. She was very well read, enjoying newspapers, magazines and biographies about politicians and historical figures. She also loved a good political discourse, as long as you were on the right side. She was a true Down Easter who gave her love and loyalty without equal. She will be sorely missed.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, an older brother, Harold Sawyer; and by her granddaughter, Jessica Jean Hodsdon. Surviving, in addition to her husband, Kenneth of Portage Lake; are her son, Stephen Hodsdon and his wife, Lisa and her son, Connor of Kennebunk; her daughter, Marie Johnson and her husband, Kenneth, of Hermon; her son, Michael Hodsdon and his wife, Mary, of Belfast; her son, Mark Hodsdon of Portland; and her daughter, Melissa White and her husband, Andrew, of Bangor; eight grandchildren, Andrew Hodsdon and his wife, Brianna, of Biddeford, Allison Hodsdon of Costa Rica, Erica Lambert and her husband, Nathan, of Bangor, Laura Johnson of Portland, Emma Johnson of Hermon, Dima Hodsdon of Belfast, Peter White and Joseph White of Bangor; four great-grandchildren, Kendall, Ethan, Hattie and Thaddeus Lambert; one brother, Robert Sawyer of Bangor; and a very special daughter-in-law, whom she loved as a daughter, Denise Hodsdon of Kennebunk. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Westgate Manor for their kind and loving care of our mother these past eight years and especially in her last hours.
