Bank’s donation to County program will help elderly residents with home repairs

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — With the onset of December, individuals begin getting into the holiday spirit by putting up lights, singing Christmas carols and buying gifts.

But for some people, the urgent need for home heating fuel drains their wallets and leaves little extra cash.

But a donation from a local bank will lend many needy County residents a hand.

Officials with the Aroostook County Action Program recently announced that TD Bank donated $10,000 to the agency through its funding arm, The TD Charitable Foundation.

The Aroostook County Action Program responds to various community needs, including assisting individuals and families with housing, employment and training.

Jeffrey Heron, the program’s housing and development officer, said the donated funds will be used by Aroostook County Action Program to fund repairs to homes occupied by low-income seniors.

“I receive calls on a regular basis from elderly County residents looking for help with home repairs,” Heron said. “There have been many times when we were not able to help due to a lack of funds.”

Acknowledging that as an “unfortunate reality,” he said Aroostook County Action Program officials do their best to refer those who do not qualify for assistance to other resources.

“We don’t like saying we can’t help,” he said.

He added that the $10,000 donation would allow the program to help more people in need.
