CORINNA – Clifford W. Sawtelle Jr., 85, went home to be with the Lord Dec. 2, 2012, in Florida. He was born Nov. 19, 1927, in Dexter, a son of Clifford and Katherine (Westgate) Sawtelle Sr.
He graduated from Corinna Union Academy in 1946 and joined the U.S. Navy, June 5, 1946, serving two plus years. He married Nola Sprague, May 18, 1949, and they made their home in Corinna, spending many winters in Zephyrhills, Fla. Cliff was employed for 20 years at Eastland Woolen Mill, Corinna, owned a local restaurant with his wife for three years, and then owned and operated Sawtelle’s Carpentry with his son, Garry from 1969 to 1997. He attended Exeter Cornerstone Baptist Church in the summer, and was a member and deacon of Faith Baptist Church, Zephyrhills, Fla. He was a member of Parian Masonic Lodge No. 160 and a former member of Corinna Sewer District and Stone Ezel Lodge No. 39, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nola Sawtelle; three children and their spouses, Garry and Marge Sawtelle, Karen and Terry Gallison, all of Corinna, and James and Holly Sawtelle of Bellows Falls, Vt.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; sister, Betty and husband, Herbert Dow, of Corinna and Florida; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Franklyn “Bud” Sawtelle; sister, Edith Janet Smith; and an infant daughter in October 1956.
A celebration of his life will be held 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Faith Baptist Church, 38634 Hwy 54 East, Zephyrhills, Fla., where friends may call 3 p.m. until the time of the service. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Exeter, with Pastor Stan Griffin officiating. Friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of services at the church. Spring burial will be at Corinna Village Cemetery. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Chapel, Corinna.
