BANGOR, Maine — Bangor is one of the 10 best winter vacation destinations in the United States, according to a website that highlights the country’s best places to live and visit.
Livablity.com decided Bangor is the eighth best place in the country to take a winter respite because of its location, less than an hour from a dozen downhill and nordic ski areas, entertainment options and scenery.
“The historic homes and buildings in this cozy New England town tend to captivate visitors, especially when they are covered with fresh fallen snow,” the website states in its post about Bangor. “Streets dating back to the early 19th Century lead to a variety of entertainment options, including live music, bars, theatrical performances, museums and restaurants.”
“Even in cold weather, the Waterfront area along the Penobscot River is a beautiful place to walk, as is the Broadway Historic District, an area filled with homes built by lumber barons of the 1800s,” the website continues.
The website also cites Hollywood Casino, Maine Discovery Museum, snowmobiling options, and the Paul Bunyan statue.
Liveability’s 10 best places to take a winter vacation in the country are: Anchorage, Alaska; Spokane, Wash.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Traverse City, Mich.; Reno, Nev.; Waukesha, Wis.; Missoula, Mont.; Bangor, Maine; Concord, N.H.; and Casper, Wyo.
The list recognizes communities that embrace their cold climates and offer residents and visitors plenty of recreation and entertainment options both indoors and outside, according the website.
