BANGOR, Maine — An Ellsworth man was charged by police early Sunday morning after he allegedly crashed a car registered to his mother and then ditched it.

Though he was not arrested, Matthew Blethen, 19, was summoned on charges of operating under the influence of intoxicants and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, Bangor police Sgt. Brad Johnston said Sunday evening, citing a police report.

According to the report, the accident at issue happened about 3:30 a.m. near 303 Husson Avenue, when Blethen allegedly struck a utility pole with the car and then fled the scene, leaving his mother’s 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier behind.

Johnston said police caught up with Blethen at Husson University. It was not immediately clear if he is a student there.
