ORONO, Maine — Rachel Harvey and Felicia Lennon have each signed their National Letter of Intent and will join the University of Maine softball program in the fall of 2013, Maine coach Lynn Coutts announced in a press release Friday.
Harvey, a catcher from Southington, Conn., will join the Black Bears after spending her high school career at Southington high school. While at Southington, Harvey helped lead the Blue Knights to the class LL finals. In her junior season at Southington, Harvey hit .429 with 23 RBIs, six doubles, four triples and a home run.
“I took visits to many schools and did a lot of camps and clinics, but as soon as I walked on the campus of the University of Maine, I knew that was where I wanted to be for the next four years,” Harvey said.
“What impressed me most about Rachel was her love of the game,” said Coutts. “She is such a hard worker and is committed to becoming the best player she can be.”
Lennon, a shortstop from Brookfield, Conn., helped lead Brookfield to a South-West Conference title in her sophomore year and a runner-up finish her junior season. Lennon was named a first-team Class L All-State selection both her sophomore and junior years, along with being named first team All-SWC all three years of her high school career.
In her junior season, Lennon batted .494 with six home runs while leading her team in on-base percentage, hits, RBI and runs scored. Lennon also plays travel ball outside of school for the Connecticut Charmers.
“I looked at many colleges but after meeting coach Coutts and visiting the campus, I knew Maine was the place for me,” said Lennon. “I felt very comfortable there and it’s where I saw myself playing D-I softball and attending college for the next four years. I’m just so honored and excited to get an athletic scholarship to play for Maine.”
“She plays the game the way it should be played … focused, consistent and with passion,” Coutts said.
The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
