ORRINGTON AND BANGOR – Daniel S. Young, 41, died unexpectedly Nov. 19, 2012. Dan was born Aug. 4, 1971, in Portland, son of Brian and Cheryl (Wentzel) Young and an older brother to Rebecca and Jennifer Young.
Dan was a lifetime resident of Orrington, Bangor and Brewer areas, graduating from Brewer High School in 1991 and the University of Maine, class of 1994. Dan spent most of his career in sales. He started with MBNA in Orono where he was promoted to their Belfast location. He then joined the automotive world first with Quirk Auto and then with Darling’s Ford. He continued his sales career in mortgages where he established and managed the new Bangor location for Dedicated Mortgage. He spent the rest of his career servicing mortgages in the Bangor area, all of which he excelled at. Dan’s passion was studying martial arts and weightlifting. He studied Kempo karate throughout his life, where he earned his black belt and shared his knowledge and expertise by teaching martial arts classes at River City Gym in Bangor. He was also a member of the Bangor Police Athletic League where he was a boxing semi-finalist in Atlanta, Ga., and also won a Golden Gloves Award in Boxing. Dan went on to open Family Fitness in Holden with this lifetime friend, Dan Richardson. Dan was also a long-time member of Union Street Athletics where he was considered part of the family and that the Red Room will just not be the same without him. Dan was a lifelong member of East Orrington Congregational Church.
He is survived by his father, Brian Young; and stepmother, Valerie of Orrington and Bradley; his sisters, Rebecca Young of California and Jennifer Young of Bangor; two nieces, Angelina Rose Marie and Naevia, both of Bangor; several aunts and uncles, Derald Young of Dixfield, Robert and Lawrence Wentzel of Maryland, Sonya and Roger Wentzel of Virginia; former in-laws, Gary and Linda Pinkham of Glenburn and former brother-in-law, Greg Pinkham of Bucksport, all of whom he remained close to; special friends, Rebecca and Josh Thompson of Brewer. Dan was predeceased by his mother, Cheryl Young of Orrington; his maternal grandparents, Arthur and Allean Wentzel of Orrington; and paternal grandmother, Joanne Young of Dedham. He was very well known throughout the community and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and colleagues.
A celebration of Dan’s life will be held 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Carl Schreiber, senior pastor of East Orrington Congregational Church, presiding. Relatives and friends are welcome to call at Brookings-Smith 4 p.m. until time of service Friday. Private interment will be at a later date at Marston Cemetery, Orrington.
