Marie Josephine (Battermann) Whitehill-Mairhuber

BANGOR – Marie Josephine (Battermann) Whitehill-Mairhuber, 93, died peacefully Nov. 22, 2012, surrounded by her loved ones at her home at Sunbury Village, Bangor. She and her brother, Bill, were born July 17, 1919, in Sayville, Long Island, N.Y., to Ludwig August and Ency Josephine (Shattuck) Battermann.
She spent her childhood summers on Fire Island, where she developed a deep love of the sea and sun, as well as an awareness of nature’s benevolence and beauty, which shaped her entire life. She graduated with honors from Sayville High School and was a Golden Eagle, the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts. She graduated from Cortland State Teachers College, now SUNY – Cortland, and taught physical education and later kindergarten. In 1943 she married Alvin Richard Whitehill of Passumsic, Vt. During their marriage they lived in Chicago, Montville, N.J., and Orono. Together they had four children and were separated only by Alvin’s death in 1981. In 1986 she married widower John Mairhuber, originally of Rochester, N.Y. Together they enjoyed traveling. She rediscovered her love of painting at this time, portraying with color the many places they visited. She was an active volunteer for her school, church and community. She helped develop the Bangor school system’s Family Life program and was a state officer in AARP. Marie was a leader in the Orono Woman’s Club, Penobscot Retired Teachers Association and Orono Festival Days. She sang in the Bangor Community Chorus, as well as in her church choir. At Sunbury Village, Bangor, she continued to volunteer – beautifying the gardens, writing the Monthly Calendar, reading to those unable to see and acting as a receptionist when needed. Her one aim was to make people happy and her smile was her signature.
She was predeceased by her parents; spouses, Alvin and John; and siblings, Ency Irene Griek, William
Battermann and Norbert Batterman. She is survived by her children, Ency Anne Whitehill and husband, Jim White, Wendy Lee Roundy and husband, David, Pamela Nan Hathaway and husband, Bruce, and Austin Richard Whitehill; grandchildren, Encyeh Tadayyon, Lily Kregenow, Shahram Tadayon, Allegra Sandak, Jonathan Roundy, Erika Bergeron and David Hathaway, Andrew, Gregory and Matthew Whitehill; their mother, Francine Foss; as well as 11 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
The family is planning a celebration of Marie’s life next summer. A selection of Marie’s paintings will be on public display this December at Bangor Public Library. Those who wish to remember Marie in a special way may make gifts to a charity of their choice in her memory. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com
