BUCKSPORT – Grace O. (Eaton) Bires, 91, died peacefully Nov. 24, 2012, at a Brewer health care facility, where she received exceptional care for several years. Grace was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Cherryfield, the daughter of Everett and Sarah (Willey) Eaton.
She resided on Verona Island and attended what was then the new Bucksport High School, graduating with the class of 1941. On Aug. 3, 1943, she married Paul P. Bires Jr., and together they raised a family of five children before their short marriage of 31 years ended by Paul’s sudden death. Grace never remarried. Grace and Paul enjoyed hosting card parties with family and friends almost every Saturday night. She loved to go for rides around Verona Island and go downtown to Main Street to “watch the people” and socialize with friends. Whoever went with her and Paul was guaranteed to be treated to an ice cream at Cushing’s Ice Cream parlor – even the family dog, Rusty. Grace loved ceramic classes at her nieces’ home. She made so many beautiful pieces, which to this day we all cherish. Grace loved to bake. At any given day you could smell the delicious aromas of cookies, cakes and whoopee pies. The holidays always guaranteed special desserts that she made. Being the mother of four active boys and one daughter, her days were filled with cooking, shopping and more laundry than anyone deserved to have. She even ironed the sheets! Grace was a member of Franklin Street United Methodist Church.
Gracey is survived by her five children and their spouses: sons, John and Donna of Hartland, Michael and Kathy, Paul and Betty, and Brent and Sherry of Bucksport and daughter, Saranne Brown and husband, Rod, of Scarborough; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. All of her sisters and brothers, Ted, Earl, Marjorie and Frances, predeceased her.
Visiting hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28. Burial will be after the service at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gracey’s memory may be made to Brewer Rehabilitation Center, 74 Parkway South, Brewer, ME 04412, attention: Activities Department.
