Kittery man accused of drunkenly crashing car in Portsmouth’s Market Square

By Jim Haddadin, Foster's Daily Democrat

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Police say an intoxicated Maine man was behind the wheel of a car that struck a post in Market Square on Thursday.

Tyler Edwards, 23, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after the 1:13 a.m. incident. Edwards allegedly crashed a 2010 Dodge Charger into a granite post outside North Church, one of the city’s historic landmarks.

“It sounds like it was toppled over,” Portsmouth Police Sgt. Rich Webb said of the post, which was owned by the city. The car was also damaged.

Edwards, of 9 Payne Road in Kittery, Maine, was released on $250 cash bail, Webb said. He faces an arraignment on Dec. 17 in Portsmouth Circuit Court.
