AVON, Maine — A man was killed early Thanksgiving morning in a collision on Route 4 that sent the victim’s vehicle into a utility pole in this Franklin County town northwest of Farmington.

Sgt. Aaron Hayden of the Maine State Police reported that Carlton Haggan, 38, of Strong was traveling north in a 1994 Ford Mustang and lost control of his car after passing two vehicles. The crash was reported at 5:45 a.m.

Hayden said Haggan’s car bounced off the side of the second of the two cars he was passing, left the road on the left and struck a utility pole, shearing it in half. Haggan was ejected from the car. Emergency responders declared him dead at the scene.

Hayden said roads were icy in the early morning hours, with patches of black ice observed on the highway. Police were reconstructing the crash to learn more, but Hayden said it seemed that Haggan was traveling faster than the speed limit, based on statements of those in the other vehicles.
