SOUTH HOPE, Maine — One man died Tuesday night in a single-car accident on Route 17 in South Hope, according to Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison.

Brian Edgecomb, 48, of Rockland was the sole occupant of the 1999 Volkswagen station wagon that crashed shortly before 8:30 p.m. near Pushaw’s Trading Post.

The car went off the road, rolled, and struck a tree. The crash is still under investigation and no cause has yet been released.

Deputy David Johnson responded to the scene.

The crash occurred about 13 hours after and a few miles east on Route 17 of another accident that required one man to be taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Black ice on the road was mentioned as a factor in that accident.
