Brewer teachers rock! As the father of a high-achieving daughter who got a world-class education in Brewer public schools, I believe Gov. Paul LePage is “out to lunch.” The dedicated staff in Brewer schools always put their heart and soul into their work despite taxing conditions. What most people do …

Mr. Weigel, you are right on point. When Governor LePage criticizes the public schools, he is simply reflecting on the public schools’ failure to properly educate him. He doesn’t realize that he has always been ineducable, irreformable, and irredeemable.

    D. Weigel, Dr. Wolford-Tucker, E. Quin-Easter: good letters.

Guess I’m uninformed but I wasn’t aware that charter schools would be exempt from “Every Child Left Behind”. Tain’t fair.

They also will be exempt from accepting handicapped, special needs, etc. students. The only thing they won’t be exempt from is taking my tax dollars.

Erica, I join you in thanking the hundreds of thousands of Mainers who turned out to the polls this month to support marriage equality!

I fully expect the US Supreme Court to rule the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional within the next 12 months. At that point, our marriages will be on truly equal footing with any other married couple in Maine.

Belated congratulations on your marriage, Erica!

Congrats! My spouse of 41 years were married in NH in 2011. Until Nov 6, we were fully prepared to leave the State if No 1 failed. We are still prepared to move to Canada if DOMA is upheld by the Supreme Court. However, I am confident that it will be found unconstitutional.

It’s going down — there is no doubt about it.

The 14th Amendment applies to ALL Americans….I concur that DOMA is going away very soon.

Nice letter, Ms Wolford- Tucker, I was a behind the scenes volunteer for almost 7 years here in Boston: Reading to people, listening to their pasts and present, a comfort request, even a lesson on Poker once in a while. This was mostly during the early age of AIDS and to see so many young people die without them knowing what caused it was more than heartbreaking, but oh so rewarding! This old blue collar guy feels so much richer for it. I suggest more people do it as we can all afford an hour here or there.

David Weigel, I am in full agreement. Both of my children received outstanding educations all the way through Maine’s public school system.

Jody Wolford-Tucker, congratulations to you and all the hospice volunteers who offer invaluable support to those of us who are going through the incredibly difficult process of bereavement. You should all be candidates for sainthood IMHO.

Life is strange. The Defense of Marriage Act is, well, indefensible! Don’t want a same sex marriage? Don’t have one. Otherwise, butt out. This is a civil society, not a christian one. We base our laws on what is good for all, not just what is good for some white, older, conservative males.

Agreed — DOMA is really a Denial of Marriage Act, because it doesn’t actually defend anyone’s marriage, but it does deny the benefits of marriage to many people.

David Weigel, I’m going out on a limb here but I bet that you and your wife were pretty involved in the education of your children. Great job to you guys also.

Erica Quin-Easter: Congratulations to you and Kate. We are so happy for you.
