TOWNSHIP 2 RANGE 8, Maine — The height and sturdiness of a Chevy SUV are part of the reason why two Van Buren residents survived a collision with a moose on Interstate 95 on Tuesday, Maine State Police said.

Gerald and Gloria Michaud were northbound on I-95 near mile marker 232 when the collision with the moose occurred about 5 p.m. The moose was killed and the front end of the vehicle, a 2012 model, took heavy damage, but the Michauds were unharmed, Trooper Larry Anderson said.

“It’s a good, quality car to take the impact that it did, and the front-end damage,” Anderson said. “It could have been a lot worse.”

The travel lane of the highway was closed around the mile marker for about an hour as emergency personnel cleaned up the accident scene.
