WOOLWICH, Maine — A group of boys from Chop Point School is planning a trip to the Tom’s River area of New Jersey to work alongside charity organizations in the Hurricane Sandy restoration effort.

The group of ninth- through 12th-graders leaves Saturday for the five-day trip, during which they plan to work with the organizations Samaritan’s Purse and The Church of Peace and Grace.

“This is an opportunity for the students to grow in service to others, which is one of the most important values we teach our young people,” said Dave Wilkinson, a math teacher and soccer coach at the private boarding school, in a press release. “The amount of devastation from Sandy is significant, and we’ll offer whatever help we can while we are there.”

The group of boys will help distribute supplies, remove debris and sand and help reconstruct destroyed homes and buildings. Ames Supply, a hardware store in Wiscasset, is providing discounts on footwear and work gloves for the group.

“The boys are going with the attitude that they will do whatever they need the Chop Pointers to do,” said vice principal Marnie Stevens.

The school is accepting donations of supplies to take with them, such as boxed milk, peanut butter, jelly or jam, new sweatpants and sweatshirts in all sizes, new clothing for boys and girls, packing tape, clothes hangers, cleaning products, bleach, diapers (sizes 1, 2, 5 and 6), new undergarments, trash bags and nonperishable food. These items may be brought to The Lodge at Chop Point School.

Chop Point School is an interdenominational Christian school serving grades K-12 since 1987 on a 50-acre campus on the shores of Merrymeeting Bay in Woolwich.
