NEWBURGH, Maine — The Newburgh Board of Selectmen passed three motions after one selectman left Monday’s meeting early.

About 43 minutes into Monday night’s meeting, Selectman Claude Bolduc got up and left after a heated discussion with other selectmen.

A survey conducted on Election Day revealed that many residents wanted the town office to be open on Mondays, said Serena Bemis-Goodall, Newburgh’s administrative assistant/manager, who conducted the survey.

Bemis-Goodall said that of more than 300 people who were surveyed, 248 wanted the town office open on Mondays. Another 53 said they wanted it open Monday through Thursday.

Before Monday’s meeting, the town office was only open Wednesday through Friday.

The selectmen voted 4-0 to have the town office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays. The office still will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

In another 4-0 vote, selectmen decided to have their meetings at 7 p.m. on the first and third Mondays. If there was a holiday or poor weather on the night of a scheduled meeting, that meeting would take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Board of Selectmen also voted 4-0 to allow Bemis-Goodall to assist the clerks working the counter in situations of illness, absence or overflow, but not be allowed to cash out.

Previously, Bemis-Goodall, who is also the treasurer, could not assist the clerks.

“My big thing about not being able to help at the counter is if we have 10 people standing out there, I should be able to help them to get caught up,” said Bemis-Goodall. “I don’t need to cash out at the end of the day. That’s their job. I just need to make sure what’s in that bag is right.”

Selectman Jim Hopkins agreed.

“It’s got to be agitating [as a customer] to see you standing there, and you can’t do anything,” he said. “That has to be more irritating than anything else we do.”
