BELFAST, Maine — A local man with a long history of car thefts was charged again Friday in connection with the recent disappearance of a 1985 Pontiac Fiero from Bridge Street in Belfast.

Victor Pendleton, 21, of Belfast is accused of taking the white sports car sometime the night of Nov. 1. The keys had been left under the seat, according to the report from the Belfast Police Department. The car owner also reported that a black Fiero had been broken into, with someone stealing a few dollars’ worth of quarters and breaking its ignition switch.

There was no sign of the missing car until Nov. 9, when a man in Jefferson contacted the car owner to say the vehicle had been parked on his woodlot for a while and he wanted to know why, Belfast Police Sgt. John Gibbs said Monday.

At that time, Pendleton was behind bars at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset after being charged at the end of October with stealing a car and carrying a loaded handgun. In that instance, he is charged with stealing a Jeep Cherokee from someone in Jefferson, according to a previous Bangor Daily News report.

An officer who interviewed Pendleton at the jail learned that he had taken the Fiero from Belfast to Augusta because he didn’t have a ride, Gibbs said. On the way back from Augusta, the vehicle’s alternator went, and he parked it at the woodlot in Jefferson, the sergeant said.

The suspect may at that point have stolen the Jeep Cherokee, according to police.

Pendleton also was charged in August with breaking into the East Side Garage in Belfast and stealing a 2001 Jaguar worth at least $10,000.

That vehicle was recovered in Lewiston by the Maine State Police a few days after it was taken from the garage.

Pendleton was charged Friday with two counts of burglary of a motor vehicle, theft by unauthorized taking, criminal mischief and unauthorized use of property.
