ORRINGTON, Maine — Traffic on Route 15 was restricted to one lane briefly Monday afternoon after a car carrying two women, including a driver who is pregnant with twins, rear-ended a pickup truck.
The driver, Kaitlyn Gravitt, no age available, and her passenger, Ashley Richards, 18, both of Bucksport, were transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy James Kennedy.
Gravitt and Richards were both wearing seat belts, according to Kennedy.
The driver of the 1998 GMC pickup, Leonel Ducas of River Road in Orrington, was heading south around 3:30 p.m. and slowing down after the Snow’s Corner Road intersection to prepare to turn onto a side road when the car slammed into the rear of the pickup, Kennedy said.
Ducas told emergency crews he would drive himself to the hospital.
Kennedy said it didn’t appear the car had slowed down before the impact, so he guessed the women may have had trouble seeing in the sun. He said he did not have a chance to interview the women.
