MEXICO, Maine — A construction site flagger from Dixfield was listed in critical condition at a Portland hospital Friday night with injuries after being run over on Route 2 near the Toll Bridge, police Lt. Roy Hodsdon said.

Alan Smith, 45, was standing in the road directing traffic at the bridge construction site at about 2:20 p.m. when he was struck by a pickup driven by Michael Tremblay, 54, of Bingham, the investigator said.

Smith was run over by the two passenger-side tires of the 2009 Dodge truck and dragged 10 feet onto the sidewalk near Rowe’s Afternoon Delite. The truck traveled on and struck a guy wire on a utility pole before it stopped, Hodsdon said.

Smith was taken to Rumford Hospital and later transported to Maine Medical Center, where a nursing supervisor said late Friday night that his condition was critical.

Smith was working for Project Flagging of Maine, a company that provides the state highway departments of Maine and New Hampshire with certified flaggers.

Tremblay was not injured, Hodsdon said, and no charges had been filed.

As of Friday night, Hodsdon said police were not sure why Tremblay hit Smith.

“I still have some follow-up interviews with witnesses to do, so hopefully we’ll know something very soon,” the lieutenant said.

Police reconstructionists will help to determine how the accident occurred.
