ORONO | The University of Maine men’s hockey team snapped its five-game home losing streak, but the Black Bears didn’t get the result they wanted. Junior defenseman Conor Allen’s goal with 1:08 remaining enabled Massachusetts to earn a well-deserved point by virtue of a 2-2 overtime tie. Maine is …

  • Typical Whitehead coached team cough up a 2 goal lead because he’s too much of a cupcake to let them continue to play hockey so his teams go into a shell.

Mahomey says nothing in this article about UMO blowing a 2-0 lead. shocker I know :)

“First-period goals by defensemen Mark Nemec and Jake Rutt staked Maine to just its second two-goal lead of the season, but UMass’ Steven Guzzo got one back on the power play in the second period.”

I know Mahomey from an earlier time. In addition to his biased reporting, he is not a nice human being.

It’s pretty pathetic really. 2-9-1 is unacceptable and Abbott puts up with it.

Wow what a way to give away a W. When will it end.
Contratulations on the 3 penalties however for Mr. Diamond. Good grief…

    • Anonymous

None of the three were even penalties.

Remember when Umass A was a guaranteed win and Maine would go unbeaten at home in the mighty Alfond……… Remember when the United States was a republic…. Those were the days.

    • Must not have been a fan long huh? UMass has always been a pain in the you know where. Back in the late 90’s early 2000’s you could always count on UMass upsetting Maine.

2 bad teams fighting it out but it still beats the NHL

Dubuque knocks off Western Conference leader Lincoln 3-2, improving to 14-1-1. Sure hope UConn doesn’t hire Jimmy and Grant after this season or there’ll be another HEA team UMO will never beat –

    • It’s going to be tough to hire Jimmy for any college job with his background now.

Why is the University of Maine spending $16 million on athletics when they don’t even care if their teams win or lose??? Taxpayers should not have to subsidize a program that just doesn’t care. How pathetic.

Boy are they bad this year.

Okay this is ridiculous…1st – games are won and lost on special teams; for those
of u who are puck challenged the PP and the PK. Our penalty killing is decent
at best, but our first and second power plays are awful. That being said there
are guys on this team that can handle the puck in a shoe box that are not on
the PP. Teach the team the umbrella, and get someone who can handle the puck
and quarterback the power play to run the top…NOT A D-MAN. 2nd – When we are
five on five we cheat defensively so much that we forgot you actually have to
play offense to score goals and win. Is this because our D is suspect? Yes the
upper class D is suspect. So how do you counter? Well you start by not having
your D over handle the puck by getting it up to the cutting forward in the
neutral zone quickly. We go D to D and long pass a chip deep into the offensive
zone every regroup (this doesn’t work), oh and “News Flash” your
turning possession of the puck over to your opponent. How about some real
hockey where you have confidence in your players to keep control of the puck by
passing through the neutral zone while crossing the blue line for a give and
go, or tick, tack, toe! I know this sounds foolish, but it works for all the
other great D1 teams, so why not give it a try. The Defensive play first stuff, and
sitting on a one goal lead (the two times we had them) doesn’t work. 3rd – I
will not single anyone out, but the lack of discipline with penalties kills me.
I understand taking a penalty once and a while to fire up the team as a
Captain, but enough. We need you on the ice. True ignorance is doing the same
thing over and over again and expecting different results. Changing an occasional
player on the 4th line and one here and there on the 3rd line is crap. Try to
look at the talent you have and put a goal scorer, play maker and physical
corner worker together on each line and see what you get. YOU MIGHT BE SUPRISED AT THE RESULT YOU GET. Well my 2 cents for what it is worth. I have watched the games and practices so I believe I have a good feel for what WILL WORK if you put your pride aside and do the right things for the team.
