McKINNEY, Texas — Jesse Speirs’ attempt to get his PGA Tour card came up short when his 4-under-par 68 in Friday’s final round of the second-stage qualifier at TPC Craig Ranch wasn’t enough to lift him into the top 20 and ties.

Bangor native Speirs finished at 4-under-par 284, tied for 39th out of a field that started with 78 players. The cut for the top 20 and ties was 11-under 277 and 21 golfers made the cut. Four competitors withdrew during the event.

The qualifiers from the six second-stage events this week will compete in the final qualifying stage Nov. 28-Dec. 3 at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. The top 25 and ties at PGA West earn PGA Tour cards, while the next number of players nearest to 50 go to the Web.com Tour.

Speirs, who now lives in Memphis, Tenn., started on the back nine Friday and played well there again, making birdies on 13, 14 and 18 to turn at 33.

He suffered his only bogey on No. 2, which he bogeyed each of the last three rounds, but posted birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 and closed out with pars for 68.

The best hole during the tournament for Speirs, winner of the 2011 Greater Bangor Open, was No. 14, a 330-yard par 4 that he eagled in the second round Wednesday and birdied the other three days. After making bogey on 18 the first day, he played the 552-yard, par-5 hole well the last three times with an eagle and two birdies.

Speirs triple-bogeyed the 219-yard, par-3 fourth hole on Tuesday to tie No.2 for his worst outcome on a hole in the event, and played No. 1 at 2 over with two pars and two bogeys.

Scott Gutschewski of Prosper, Texas, was the medalist after shooting a 68 to finish at 20-under 268. Scott Dunlap of Duluth, Ga., was second at 269 after a 67 Friday.
