CUTLER – Gerald “Bud” C. Cates Sr., 93, passed away and went to be with the Lord Nov. 9, 2012, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Sept. 8, 1919, in Cutler, the son of Jasper C. and Etta (Moan) Cates.
He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II. A lifelong resident of Cutler, he loved the ocean and spent his whole life lobster fishing until retirement. He was a jack-of-all-trades, loved music and always enjoyed a good laugh. He and his wife were faithful members of Cutler Methodist Church. He will be remembered most for being a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ida (Hall) Cates of Cutler; three children, Beverly (Cates) Dennison and husband, Cedric, of Eddington, Brenda Ackley of Port Orange, Fla., and Gerald Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Cutler; one sister, Mara Rebhan of California; seven grandchildren, Rene Davis of Winterport, Kelley Dennison and companion, Jesse Owen, of Etna, Joseph and Charity Dennison of Machias, Donna and Timothy Slater of Eddington, Christopher Cates of Cutler, Timothy Cates of Cutler and Arthur Gardner Jr. of Brewer; and eight great-grandchildren, Morgan, Jackson, Isaiah and Finn Slater, Hailey and Aron Owen, Kennedy Cates and Jacob Dennison. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Larry Gerald; and three brothers, Willard Cates of Bangor, Robert Cates of Cutler and Jasper Cates of Cutler.
A funeral service will be held noon Monday, Nov. 26, at Cutler Methodist Church with a time of remembrance and refreshments immediately afterward. Cards or notes of encouragement would be greatly appreciated for his wife, Ida, while she is recovering at Eastern Maine Medical Center and may be sent to EMMC, Room 376, Bangor, ME 04401.
