All his customers who paid the sales tax to him should be proud of what an up-front guy he is. Lots more like him around too.

So report them. The state has a tip line and email, snail mail addresses are available online.

Which is worse, having the IRS or the state of Maine after you?

    • Anonymous

Having YEXW after you is tougher. Be a good boy and avoid this organization at all costs.

The state of Maine by a long shot. If you owe the state of Maine money and you try to die on them, you will still pay. They will get a court order, have you exhumed, and pry the fillings out of your teeth for the silver. I’ll take the I.R.S. any day. If the music man is messing with those guys right now, he is hating life.

The federal sentences are much longer for the same offence

Make sure you pay your dues into the support entitlements club.Someone in Maine has been sitting home waiting for that money.

    • And thanks to men and women like him, law abiding tax payers pay more. Welfare cheats, tax cheats, all the same to me.

What gets me are the corporations that actually do file tax forms and STILL manage to get off without paying their share, if any tax at all!

        • While perhaps morally repugnant, if it’s legal, the problem is not with the corporation, but the laws that allow them to do this.

20 years ago or so ago I had a person come into my office for assistance with an audit. He was screaming about them picking on the small guy, his average taxable income for the two years was $9,000. After the audit it turns out his average taxable income was over $200,000. Small guy indeed. Surprisingly they did not make a criminal case out of it.

And, he is just getting caught???

  • Anonymous

He is one of those 47% Oven Mitt was talking about.

Actually this case wasn’t about the taxes he did or didn’t pay. It was about the taxes that his customers paid and he stole.

Yes, it seems more like theft than just tax avoidance, and that statement by the judge that the guy was “extraordinarily cooperative” is utter nonsense. Stealing tax receipts for 30 years or more, until he was caught, is not being cooperative. Instead of crawling all over themselves in what almost amounts to an apology to the defendant, the prosecutor and judge should have insisted on a felony disposition instead of letting it go as a misdemeanor.

The man makes a great guitar. He has a couple of very talented luthiers working with him too. Hopefully this won’t ruin his business.

Hmmmm… What about his Federal filing? Did the “extra money” get reported as income?

  • JohnR

Keep it as a felony so this guy can’t own a gun, after he gets out of jail…………..wait white collar crime……… jail nooooooo maybe Speaker of the House but no jail.

Income tax should be abolished because you earn the money by working it’s not given to you, so it’s not a profit. and that was how it was originally set up. Businesses paid tax on profit.

funny how he turned cooperative only after he was caught.
