Bangor native Speirs shoots 75 in PGA Tour second-stage qualifying round

Bangor native Jesse Speirs will take the next step toward qualifying for the PGA Tour when he competes in a second-stage tourney Nov. 11-17 at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.

McKINNEY, Texas — Bangor native Jesse Speirs shot a 3-over-par 75 Tuesday in the opening round of the PGA Tour’s second-stage qualifying tournament at TPC Craig Ranch.

Speirs is tied for for 69th in the 78-player field. Play in this four-round event continues through Friday.

The top 18 and ties from each of the six second-stage qualifiers advance to the final qualifier at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., Nov. 28-Dec. 3.

The top 25 and ties in the six-round final stage will earn their PGA Tour cards, and the next group of qualifiers closest to 50 will go to the Tour.

Nathan Green of Nashville and Matt Jones of Scottsdale, Ariz., tied for the day’s best round at 6-under 66.

The field includes several former PGA Tour players, including Paul Stankowski of Flower Mound, Texas; Brenden Pappas of McKinney, Texas; and Woody Austin of Derby, Kan. Pappas is tied for 24th at 70, Stankowski shares 32nd at 71 and Austin is tied for 46th at 72.

Speirs, who now lives in Memphis, Tenn., opened his round with a bogey on the first hole, then triple-bogeyed the fourth hole before making a birdie on No. 5, the first of his two birdies on the day.

He bogeyed No. 6, then eagled No. 9, a 564-yard par 5, to make the turn at 2-over 38. On the back nine, he bogeyed No. 11, birdied 14 and bogeyed No. 18.
