WATERVILLE, Maine — Local police Monday arrested a man wanted on charges of aggravated assault and battery in Massachusetts, police said.

Damien Raymond, 29, who had been staying at the Budget Host Hotel, is being held at the Kennebec County Correctional Facility on a fugitive from justice charge, Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said.

Waterville police Officer Timothy Hinton was driving through the hotel lot at about 9 a.m. Monday when he noticed a black vehicle with red spray paint, Rumsey said.

A check of the license plates revealed the vehicle was Raymond’s, and further investigation determined he was wanted by New Bedford, Mass., police on charges of aggravated assault and battery, Rumsey said.

After staff confirmed to police that Raymond was renting a room at the hotel, police took him into custody without incident, the deputy chief said.

Raymond remains at the jail pending an extradition hearing, which will take place in the next two weeks, Rumsey said.
