Auburn women’s basketball team spoils Maine’s opener with 71-41 victory


RALEIGH, N.C. — The Auburn Tigers took a 12-point halftime lead and surged to a 23-point margin at the start of the second half en route to a 71-41 victory over the Maine Black Bears in a women’s basketball mutual opener at the Raleigh Wolfpack Invitational Friday.

Hasina Muhammad led the Auburn attack with a career-high 20 points, including two 3-pointers to spark a 15-4 scoring run to close out the first half. Tyrese Tanner added 15 points and nine rebounds.

Freshman Anna Heise paced Maine with 12 points and four rebounds while classmate Liz Wood chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.
Freshman Mikaela Gustafsson added nine points.

Auburn held Maine to a 17-of-51 (33 percent) shooting effort from the field, including a 4-of-22 effort from 3-point land. Meanwhile the Tigers hit 29-of-70 (41 percent) shots from the field, including 10-of-25 (40 percent) for 3-pointers.

Auburn worked its way to an eight-point lead after breaking out on a 11-2 run midway through the second half before the Black Bears answered with a 7-0 run of their own. The Tigers answered as they went on an extended 15-4 run to close out the half.

Auburn extended its lead to 48-25 as it started the second half on a 13-2 run fueled by a pair of buckets from Peyton Davis. Maine’s Brittany Wells put an end to the Auburn run with a move on the left wing which ended in a pull-up jumper from the left elbow.

Auburn’s Muhammad answered the Maine bucket with a 7-0 run of her own to push the Auburn lead to 58-29 with 7:38 to play in the second half.

Heise paced Maine’s first-half attack going 4-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line en route to 10 points. Maine went 9-for-22 from the field in the opening half. Muhammad led the Tigers with 10 opening half points while Tanner added eight points and eight rebounds.

Maine plays another tourney game at 5 p.m. Saturday against Wofford.
