Labor leaders warn of cuts to Medicare, Social Security

Updated:

BANGOR, Maine — Maine labor leaders and workers gathered in Bangor on Thursday to warn against cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security in the aftermath of this week’s election.

“The election may have just ended, but Maine’s working families are already mobilizing to protect these critical programs,” said Don Berry, president of the Maine AFL-CIO.

“Some in Congress are prepared to throw our country over the fiscal cliff in order to preserve lavish tax cuts for the top 2 percent,” said Jack McKay, president of the Eastern Maine Labor Council.

Tammy Marston, a millworker from Bucksport, said workers in physically demanding jobs such as hers would be devastated by increases in the Social Security retirement age.

McKay said the group shared its concerns with the staff of U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.
