PROSPECT, Maine — Wet roads from Thursday’s snow and rain may have been to blame for a head-on collision on Route 1A that claimed the life of one of the drivers.
Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday that William Dunham, 79, of Frankfort died after his vehicle slammed into another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The collision was reported at 6:23 p.m.
The driver of the other vehicle, Powell Johnson, 64, of Frankfort was seriously injured and taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Susan Johnson, his passenger, was taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast.
Trafton said details remained unclear, but Susan Johnson told first responders that Dunham’s vehicle suddenly crossed the centerline. Trafton did not have information about which direction the vehicles were traveling, or the makes and models. He also did not know whether road conditions were to blame, but the highway was wet from snow and rain earlier in the day.
