PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island voters have overwhelmingly backed the re-election bid of President Barack Obama over Mitt Romney, the former governor of neighboring Massachusetts.
Tuesday’s victory was no surprise and gives Obama the state’s four electoral votes.
Obama carried Rhode Island in 2008, and the state is a Democratic stronghold.
Registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans in Rhode Island nearly four-to-one.
Obama was backed by many of the state’s top politicians, including Gov. Lincoln Chafee, a former Republican-turned-independent.
