Whitetail doe poses for a photo

By Dave Small, Special to the BDN

Three recent outings provided some nice photo opportunities. Right out my door, the University of Maine Forest gave up a hermit thrush scouring through the fallen leaf litter searching for food.

A little later and farther down the trail a white-tailed doe deer peeked out of the woods for a shutter click. The Stud Mill Road in the Greenfield area didn’t disappoint either. This gray jay followed me for nearly 15 minutes offering some nice poses.

The wild strawberry plant was a bonus, lit up with fall colors and frost.

Getting “useless in Eustis” for a few days was great relaxation and adventure. While out on a road off the Flagstaff Road, this ruffed grouse defiantly stood ground while I got to within a few feet of him. Lucky for him I was hunting with my camera, not my pistol.

Perhaps, he’d have been lucky either way.
