HAMPDEN – Robert Bartlett Chase, 83, husband of Mary Ellyn (Nickerson) Chase, passed away Nov. 2, 2012, surrounded by his family at a Bangor hospital. He was born May 9, 1929, in Unity, the son of Wallace Bartlett Chase and Lena Dorothy (Marriner) Chase.

Bob lived in Unity until he moved with his family to Bangor. He entered the U.S. Army and while home on leave he married Mary Ellyn (Nickerson), Dec. 30, 1951. Ten days after his marriage he was sent to serve overseas in the Korean War. Returning from the Army, Bob and Mary made their home in Hampden and Bob went to work for New England Telephone Co. Robert retired from New England Telephone after 28 years of service. Bob was civic minded and served the town of Hampden as a dispatcher for Hampden Police Department, handling calls for the town’s police, fire, ambulance and public works, as first selectman of Hampden and as the town’s cemetery sexton. Bob worked as a funeral assistant at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home for 35 years. His calm and reasonable voice served families and the community in a far reaching way, as a dispatcher and as a funeral assistant. Work was Bob’s hobby and after retirement he enjoyed working in the family business – Village Miniatures – building dollhouses and chatting with customers. He was a lifetime member of Whitcomb-Baker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4633, Hampden, and Telephone Pioneers of America. Robert will be remembered for his easy going way, great sense of humor and most of all as a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary of Hampden; daughters, Ellyn J. Chase and Janet P. Chase, both of Hampden; brother, David H. Chase and wife, Joanne, of Unity; sisters, Dorothy Costello and husband, Robert, of Conyers, Ga., and Alice Jane Shoppe of Hampden; sister-in-law, Joyce Mayer of Hampden; special friends, Jerome and Marie Sanford of Hampden; many special nieces and nephews; and special friend, Darlene Bean of Bangor. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald M. Chase of Unity. The family gives special thanks to St. Joseph Hospital fifth floor Cardiac Care Unit staff, particularly Alex and Ashley for their compassionate care of Bob during his illness, and to Bob’s nephew, Tom Dorrity for the many hours he stayed with Bob in his final days.

Family and friends may call 4-6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, with the Rev. Jeffrey Tenney officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden. In keeping with Bob’s love for the town of Hampden, memorial gifts may be made to Hampden Ambulance Service, 106 Western Ave., Hampden, ME 04444.
