American Red Cross announces winners of Real Heroes Awards

BREWER, Maine — The American Red Cross of Maine, Pine Tree Chapter, announced on Oct. 31 the winners of the 2012 Real Heroes awards:

• Nikki Jackson of Old Town will receive an award for saving the life of her 3-year-old nephew after he was found unconscious at the bottom of a pool at a family reunion. Nikki performed CPR, revived the child and the child recovered and suffered no permanent effects.

• Officer Andrew Weatherbee of the Ellsworth Police Department will receive a Real Hero award for rescuing a man from his burning vehicle after a serious car accident by breaking the rear window and pulling the man to safety.

• Samantha Moore, 10, of Milbridge will receive an award for performing first aid on a man who fell from the bleachers at a community event as the result of a cardiac event he suffered. Samantha administered Red Cross First Aid techniques she learned from her mother, a former Navy Corpsman. She kept the man awake to keep him from going into shock and applied cold packs to his dislocated shoulder until emergency personnel arrived.

• Orono High School juniors Tyler Jewett and Anton Klose, both of Orono, will be recognized as Real Heroes for jumping into the Stillwater River to save a woman from drowning. The boys worked together to save the woman who was being pulled downriver by the current.

• Retired Col. Tim Hackett of Orono will be awarded for performing CPR on his friend who suffered cardiac arrest and stopped breathing at a dance at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer. Hackett kept his friend’s blood flowing with chest compressions until emergency personnel arrived to restore his pulse using an automatic external defibrillator.

• John Hafford, general manager of Texas Roadhouse in Bangor, will receive an award for his support of the Red Cross Blood Collection program. Hafford and his staff cook and donate food for the more than 250 blood donors at the annual Chill n’ Grill Super Blood Drive in Bangor.

The awards will be presented at the Heroes Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Jeff’s Catering and Event Center. U.S. Sen. Susan Collins is expected to attend the event.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Red Cross of Maine’s local disaster relief and emergency preparedness efforts throughout Maine. The funds also will help support the agency’s current response and relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
