Winter youth soccer, hockey programs getting under way

BANGOR, Maine — Two youth soccer winter programs with Seacoast United Blackbear are getting under way in coming days.

The first — Jr. Academy, also known as Jr. Blackbear — starts Sunday at Fields4Kids behind Beal College on Farm Road and registration is still available.

The player development program is for boys and girls ages 7-12 with an emphasis on skill development with individual and small-group activities and small-sided play.

There will be one practice per week through April 7 plus eight games. The cost is $495 per player and includes a pair of shorts, a jersey, a pair of socks and a ball.

The winter session of Grassroots Soccer begins Wednesday, also at Fields4Kids, for children ages 4-9. Grassroots is an eight-week introductory program where the children learn soccer through fun and in a friendly environment.

There is one training session per week and one match play session per week through Jan. 12. The fee is $125 per player.

Majestix field hockey tryouts

The Maine Majestix indoor field hockey club has set tryout dates for its age-group teams. The tryouts will be held at Alfond Youth Center in Waterville.

The first tryout is Saturday for its Under-12 (8-10 a.m.) and U14 (10 a.m.-noon) teams. The U16 tryouts are 7-9 p.m. Sunday and 6-7:45 p.m. Wednesday, and the U19 sessions are 8-10 p.m. Monday and 8-9:45 p.m. Wednesday).

‘Try Hockey for Free’

Brewer Youth Hockey is hosting a second “Try Hockey for Free” session from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Penobscot Ice Arena.

Area children can see if they are interested in playing or just try it for something fun and different to do.

Volleyball tryouts set

Maine Junior Olympic Volleyball tryouts are Nov. 9 for U15-U18 gold-level players in Cumberland and Biddeford and Nov. 11 for all other teams, including the Northeast U16 and U18 sessions at Ellsworth Elementary/Middle School.

Registration is now open online at the Maine Juniors website, mainejuniors.org, and the complete tryout schedule for all players is also available there, too.

High school girls volleyball players as well as those who attend schools without an official varsity volleyball program are invited to these tryouts.

Central Maine coaches’ meeting

The Central Maine 7-8 Girls and Boys Travel League will hold an informational meeting for coaches at Alfond Youth Center in Waterville at 4 p.m. on Nov. 11.
