Friday’s college roundup, field hockey: Albany 4, Maine 1


DURHAM, N.H. — Albany’s Daphne Voormolen scored two first-half goals to en route to a 4-1 victory over the Maine Black Bears in an America East field hockey semifinal Friday.

The Black Bears scored their only goal and started the second-half scoring as Nicole Sevey tipped in a goal. Set up on the penalty corner, Zoe Adkins inserted the ball to the top of the circle where the stop was made. Annabelle Hamilton slid a shot toward the Great Dane cage where Sevey was perfectly located on the left post for the tip high into the cage.

Albany responded with a pair of goals in the next 3:33.

Alicia Frisch made five saves for Maine, which finished at 10-10. Albany goalkeeper Kristi Troch made one save as the Great Danes outshot the Bears 13-6.

Men’s soccer

Briarcliffe 2, UMFK 1 (2OT)

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Fifth-ranked Briarcliffe College knocked off the top-ranked University of Maine-Fort Kent men’s soccer team 2-1 in double overtime during the USCAA semifinal round Friday.

Briarcliffe’s Hector Guerrero found the back the the UMFK net in the 104th minute to give his team the win.

UMFK scored first in the 32nd minute on a goal by Curvin Bannister, but gave up the equalizer in the 77th minute to Briarcliffe’s Troy Antonacci.

Briarcliffe advances to the final at 1 p.m. Saturday against No. 2 West Virginia Tech. UMFK finishes at 17-2.

Women’s soccer

UMFK 7, Albany Pharmacy 1

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The top-ranked University of Maine-Fort Kent women’s soccer team defeated Albany College of Pharmacy 7-1 Friday afternoon in the USCAA national semifinals and will play for their third straight national title at 11 a.m. Saturday against No. 6 Daemen College.

UMFK scored four first-half goals for the second straight day and have now outscored their opponents 13-1 in the tourney’s first two rounds. Katherine Ferland scored the game’s first goal in the 11th minute and would add two more for her second consecutive hat trick.

UMFK also received goals from Ariane Pelletier, Theresa Biggs and Erin Madore. Their second goal was an own goal.

Victoria Dubois-Iredale, Kayla Richards, Marie Pier-Daze, Pelletier, Ferland and Jenn Colpitts all got credit for assists for 16-0 UMFK.

Kimika Forbes, who gave up her first goal of the tourney in the 62nd minute to Jen Bechard, made two saves on three shots. UMFK outshot Albany 12-3 overall with Alexandra Weston making five saves for 9-5-1 Albany.

Women’s ice hockey

Providence 4, Maine 3

ORONO — Providence College took a 2-0 first-period lead en route to a 4-3 women’s ice hockey win over Maine Friday at Alfond Arena.

Molly Illikainen got the Friars on the board first just 2:04 into the first period. Haley Frade picked up the assist on the goal. Lexi Slattery gave Providence a 2-0 lead eight minutes later as she got an assist from Allison Micheletti and Jessica Vella.

Maine’s Audra Richards capitalized on the power play at 17:01 to cut the Providence lead in half.

Maine’s Tori Pasquariello tied the game at 2-2 12:16 into the second half on a breakaway score.

Micheletti gave the Friars a 3-2 lead three minutes later on an unassisted goal.

Frade scored the fourth and final goal for Providence at 6:24 on a power-play opportunity. Richards scored her second goal on the power play. Brittany Ott finished with 37 saves for 1-6 Maine and Sarah Bryant had 16 for 5-3-1 Providence.
