‘Accepting the Spirit of Vatican II’ program set in Portland

By Judy Harrison, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — A program called “Accepting the Spirit of Vatican II” will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St.

Deacon Norm Carroll of Fort Lauderdale will lead the sessions that will end each evening with a Mass.

Carroll studied seven years for the priesthood, then trained and became a practicing chiropractic physician, according to information on his website http://www.biblemission.net/. He was ordained a Catholic deacon in 1979 and obtained his Doctor of Ministry degree in 1994.

The Portland event is being held in celebration of the Year of Faith and in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Vatican II, according to Michelle Bernier, pastoral life coordinator for the Portland peninsula and island parishes.

The program is open to all Catholics, nonpracticing Catholics and non-Catholics, she said. The presentations will cover the Bible, conscience, personal freedom, division in the church, the call to holiness and more, Bernier said in a press release.

The sessions are titled “Church: A Changing Constant”; “Church: Transforming”; “Our Living Liturgy”; and “That All May Be One,” a quote from John 17:21.

The program is being held about three weeks after Pope Benedict XVI held a special Mass in St. Peter’s Square to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening ceremonies of the Vatican II council, held from 1962 to 1965. Vatican II is best known for having the Mass said in the vernacular of the people rather than in Latin.

The pope in his homily on Oct. 11 called for “a revival in the church of the ‘yearning to announce Christ again to contemporary man,’” according to the Catholic News Service. Benedict also “reaffirmed past statements rejecting any expansive notions of a ‘spirit of Vatican II’ that might be used to justify innovations diverging from traditional doctrine.”
