BOSTON — Brian Butterfield is returning to New England.

The former three-sport star at Orono High School and second baseman for the University of Maine is joining new manager John Farrell’s Boston Red Sox staff as the third-base coach.

Butterfield is the second former Blue Jays coach to follow Farrell to the Red Sox in a week’s span. Torey Lovullo was named Boston’s bench coach on Friday.

Butterfield first became the Blue Jays’ third-base coach in June 2002. He moved up to bench coach in September 2007 and spent two full seasons in that capacity before going back to coaching third for the ’10 season.

Butterfield has been coaching in pro baseball for 28 years.

He broke in with the New York Yankees organization as a roving infield instructor after playing in their system from 1979-84.

He was named Manager of the Year in the Single-A Gulf Coast League in his first season as a manager in 1988.

Six years later, he moved up to the Yankees, where he was the first-base coach under current Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter.

Showalter moved on to manage the Arizona Diamondbacks and Butterfield went with him as his third-base coach.

Butterfield eventually went back to the Yankees in 2001 and managed minor-league affiliate Tampa to a championship in the Class A Florida State League.

He was promoted to AAA Columbus the next year but was fired in May.

The Blue Jays hired him three weeks later as their third-base coach and infield instructor.

Butterfield played one year for his late father Jack Butterfield at the University of Maine before his father took the coaching position at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Brian followed his father to Florida but attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland.

His father was serving as vice president of player development and scouting for the Yankees at the time of his death in an auto accident in 1979.

Butterfield and his wife Jan (Walton) live in southern Maine.
