BANGOR, Maine — The 2012 Relay for Life of Penobscot County has been named one of the Top 25 Relays in New England. The event netted more than $204,000, which exceeded its fundraising goal. Of the 230 Relays in New England, Relay For Life of Penobscot County placed 18th in funds raised. The 2012 Relay for Life of Penobscot County included 85 teams walking the track for 18 hours.

“This distinction is a nice reminder that the hard work that is put in by all of the teams and volunteers at the Relay for Life of Penobscot County is making a difference,” said Chad LaBree, chairman of the 2013 Relay for Life of Penobscot County. “Everybody works very hard, and everybody works together to make this event stand out. We’re honored to be recognized and we’re already looking forward to the 2013 Relay season.”

The money raised goes to local cancer-related programs, cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services, including transportation for cancer patients and one-on-one support for women with breast cancer.

In May 2013 Relay For Life of Penobscot County will celebrate its 20th year. Registration for the Relay is now open, fundraising has begun, and teams and individuals are encouraged to sign up. The official 2013 Relay for Life of Penobscot County kickoff will take place in January. The Relay will take place May 17-18.

“The success we have had over the past two decades is tremendous,” Labree said. “Looking ahead to this year’s Relay, we want to continue to work on bringing a family atmosphere, a fun and innovative environment, and a great time to friends, family and caregivers.”

In 2013, the Relay For Life planning committee has set a goal to host more than 100 teams and raise at least $205,000.
